The hegemonic pretension of President Obama

We were deeply amazed at the President Obama’s speech to the cadets of West Point, and in him the arrogant assertion of American hegemony: for the present and for the future.

“America will always be the leading nation of the world”, because “if we don’t do it, no one will”.
“Our defence has no equal in the world,
our economy is the strongest,
our business the most innovative,
we are and will remain the hub of the world ”
“And the army is the backbone of this leadership”.
To these statements we answer that all the populations of humanity, in their autonomy, in their dignity and right, do not need leaders, nor do they need supreme guides or great gendarmes.
All peoples, in full equality, are collected in a large global community, the Organization of the United Nations, This is the only guide, and the only authority they recognize.

The U.S., with their claim to greatness, and with their armaments, their military bases, their naval squadrons, that they maintain worldwide, instead, represent a danger for humanity.
And in fact, in the only post-war period they unleashed five wars – on Korea, on Vietnam, on the Gulf, on Afghanistan, and on Iraq – an ignominious fact at an age when humanity sought instead peace.
And they have lost all these wars, except one, – and their power has served for nothing, if not to disfigure the planet, –: the first for the intervention of China; the others for the outbreak of guerrilla warfare, against which their power can do nothing.

Their claim to hegemony is dangerous also because it unleashes the hegemonic will of other nations: China, Russia, and so multiplies the dangers to mankind.

Therefore, the European Union, which is still under construction, and which we hope will soon present itself as a large Federation of sovereign States, with over 500 million inhabitants, with a huge potential of culture, of science and technology, and of production – and which can be even more powerful than the U.S. – should operate in the world as a principle of solidarity and peace, rejecting every hegemony.

Ci ha profondamente stupito il discorso del Presidente Obama ai cadetti dell’Accademia di West Point, e in esso l’affermazione arrogante dell’egemonia americana: per il presente e per il futuro.

“L’America sarà sempre la nazione leader del mondo”, perché “se non lo facciamo noi, nessuno lo farà”.
“La nostra Difesa non ha pari nel mondo,
la nostra economia è la più forte,
il nostro business il più innovativo,
siamo e restiamo il perno del mondo”.
“E di questa leadership l’esercito è la spina dorsale”.

A queste affermazioni rispondiamo che i popoli dell’umanità, nella loro autonomia, nella loro dignità e diritto, non hanno bisogno di leader, non hanno bisogno di guide supreme o di grandi gendarmi.
Perché tutti i popoli, in piena parità, sono raccolti in una grande comunità planetaria, l’Organizzazione delle nazioni unite, ed è questa l’unica guida, come l’unica autorità che riconoscono.

Gli Usa, nella loro pretesa di grandezza, e con gli armamenti, le basi militari, le squadre navali che mantengono un tutto il mondo, rappresentano invece per l’umanità un pericolo.
E in realtà, nel solo secondo dopoguerra, hanno scatenato ben cinque guerre – di Corea, di Vietnam, del Golfo, d’Afghanistan, d’Iraq – un fatto ignominioso in un’età in cui l’umanità cercava invece la pace.
E queste guerre, tranne una, le hanno tutte perdute – e a nulla, se non ad insanguinare il pianeta, è servita la loro potenza –: la prima per l’intervento della Cina; le altre per lo scatenarsi della guerriglia, contro cui la loro potenza non può nulla.

Questa loro pretesa di egemonia è pericolosa anche perché scatena la volontà egemonica di altri popoli: la Cina, la Russia; e così moltiplica i pericoli per l’umanità.
Perciò l’Unione Europea, che è ancora in costruzione, e che noi speriamo possa presentarsi al più presto come grande Federazione di Stati sovrani, con oltre 500 milioni di abitanti, con un enorme potenziale di cultura, di scienza e tecnologia, di produzione – e che potrà essere anche più potente degli Usa – vogliamo che operi nel mondo come principio di pace e di solidarietà, nel rifiuto di ogni egemonia.
